Ford Leads U.S. Automaker Reliability, Magazine Says

Ford Motor Co., the only major U.S. automaker to avoid bankruptcy, ranks higher than its domestic competitors in reliability, with average or above ratings on 90 percent of its models, Consumer Reports magazine said. Ford’s Fusion and Mercury Milan sedans also did better than Toyota Motor Corp.’s Camry and Honda Motor Co.’s Accord, the top sellers in that segment, the magazine said (Tuesday) in releasing its annual auto-reliability survey. Ford seems to have really differentiated itself from the other domestic automakers,” said Tom Libby, an independent automotive analyst based in Birmingham, Michigan. “If they can continue that trend, it will give them a huge advantage.”

Ford's better idea

October 31, 2009

In the storm that hit the U.S. auto industry last year, all three major American makes were fighting to stay afloat. But not all got a federal bailout. Despite its serious financial troubles, Ford Motor Co. declined to ask for a life preserver, while General Motors and Chrysler got federal aid to keep them going. Ford, in effect, paid a penalty for its success and restraint. But now it's getting a reward.

In the third quarter of this year, GM and Chrysler saw their year-over-year shares of the market fall sharply. Japanese brands such as Honda and Nissan held their own. But Ford boosted its market share by more than 5 percentage points.

That's quite a change for a corporation that lost a staggering $14.6 billion in 2008. Some industry analysts think Ford could break even for the quarter, and one predicted a profit. The Wall Street Journal reports that two of Ford's models will make this year's Kelley Blue Book list of vehicles likely to hold their value best -- up from none in last year's survey.

Why are Americans flocking to Ford? One obvious reason is that the company makes sound cars. In Consumer Reports' annual reliability ratings that came out this week , Ford left its U.S. competitors in the rear-view mirror. Ford, said the magazine, is "the only Detroit automaker with world-class reliability." Ninety percent of its models are rated average or better in reliability.

Another factor is that bankruptcy tends to cast a pall over any company's products, but especially products that are expensive and expected to be in service for years to come. Nobody minds grabbing a bargain fare from an airline that is in Chapter 11. Nobody is afraid to pick up a coffee table when a furniture store has a going-out-of-business sale. Buying a car from a company that you fear may disappear before the warranty expires is more worrisome.

But some consumers are probably also voting against the Obama administration's costly bailout of GM and Chrysler in the most eloquent way they can devise. The bailout was never a popular idea. Last summer, a Rasmussen poll found that 46 percent of Americans said they were more likely to buy a Ford because the company didn't accept federal funds -- and that 19 percent said they know someone who steered clear of GM and Chrysler models because those companies did.

"The reaction's been incredibly positive," Lewis Echlin, a Ford executive, told the Arkansas News Bureau. "The customers are coming in and shaking hands with the general managers of the stores and the sales consultants, saying, 'I'm here because you didn't take the money.' "

Yes, that's a self-serving observation -- but that doesn't automatically make it wrong. You can force Americans to rescue failing carmakers. But when they get the chance to spend their own dollars, they have ways of evening the score.

2010 Ford Taurus
PRECISION. PRIDE. PASSION.

We challenged our team to deliver the most driver-focused, precisely
engineered automobile we could design. A car that not only changes what

people drive, but how they drive.
With unwavering commitment and unrelenting attention to every last detail,
we’re proud to have created the new 2010 Ford Taurus –a vehicle so innovative,
it includes purposeful, state-of-the-art technologies and surprisingly brilliant
features that no other car in the class offers.
To find out more, read on. To experience everything that makes the new
Taurus unlike any other, drive one today.

FOR EVERY LINE, THERE IS A REASON.
“ Follow any line on this car, and just as soon as it seems to disappear, another will
pick up and race you right around the car,” explains Earl Lucas, Design Manager
for the new 2010 Ford Taurus. The effect is the result of many dedicated hours
in the design studio, sculpting the perfect curves.
Indeed, this physique keeps your eye constantly moving – from the chrome
grille, over the confident domed hood, and down the muscular body. You may
pause a moment to ponder a gleaming, meticulously machined wheel. Then trace
the shapely shoulder back to the forward-leaning tail.
The flow seems uninterrupted and flawlessly coherent, thanks to its purity of
design. To accentuate every detail, a rich paint finish with clearcoat is fastidiously
applied and then scrutinized by ultrasound to ensure that Taurus appears as if
it’s been dipped in a deep, liquid gloss coating.
